Sherman Oaks has always been known to have an endless variety of shopping such as its two large shopping malls ( Sherman Oaks Galleria & Sherman Oaks Fashion Square ).  Many boutiques and small mom and pop businesses also line the real estate of its "Main Street" which is known as Ventura Boulevard .

The approximate real estate boundaries for Sherman Oaks are Mulholland Drive, Ethel Avenue, Burbank Boulevard and Firmament Avenue (on the west side of the 405 freeway). As you drive north on the 405 freeway into the San Fernando Valley you first come to the real estate known as Sherman Oaks.

Sherman Oaks is a sophisticated suburban community. General Moses Hazeltine Sherman originally subdivided in 1927. General Sherman purchased 1000 acres of land when he was a partner in the Los Angeles Suburban Homes Company, a realty firm, in the early 1910's.

Around 1935, the William Mellenthin (real estate development) Company built several homes in the Valley with a birdhouse type design on the attached garage roof. Later some people referred to them as "birdhouse" homes. They Mellenthin real estate development company built in a couple of neighborhoods in Sherman Oaks such as the "Sherman Woods" develoment and the "Hidden Woods" development.

Sherman Oaks was one of the first areas in the San Fernando Valley to have intensive real estate development.

For 30 years one of the largest and oldest agricultural realty enterprises, Sunkist Growers, has been based in Sherman Oaks.  Financial brokerage houses and banks, major real estate brokerage firms are included among the financial institutions in the area. The nationally known Grossman Burn Center is located at ShermanOaksHospital's on Van Nuys Boulevard.

On June 19, 1942, three weeks after turning 16, Marilyn Monroe married Jim Dougherty. They lived in a studio apartment at 4542 Vista del Monte.

Mobster Jack (the Enforcer) Whalen was shot on December 2, 1958 at Rondelli's Italian Restaurant located at 13359 Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks. Gangster Mickey Cohen witnessed the hit and some think Mr. Cohen may have been the hit man. 

Opened in 1938, the art deco style La Reina Theater was designed by S. Charles Lee. He was a famous architect who worked on many of the San Fernando Valley's well known theaters. In 1988 it was remodeled into a busy shopping area.
