Once Van Nuys was the model of a "Middle America Suburb," Today it is a vibrant multi-cultural and multi-ethnic neighborhood, Van Nuys was founded in 1911. Local restaurants serve cuisine from all corners of the globe and dozens of languages can be heard on the streets.
Van Nuys and Van Nuys Boulevard are both named after Issac Van Nuys who founded the San Fernando Farm Homestead Association, a real estate firm, in or about 1869.
Around 1865, the Southern Pacific Railroad was built. To get to Los Angeles from Van Nuys you would go via its Electric Red Cars which rans along what is now Sherman Way.
In 1915 Van Nuys was annexed to the City of Los Angeles in the interest of having access to real estate touching a portion of the Los Angeles Aqueduct.
A famous sex symbol, Marilyn Monroe, lived in Van Nuys on Odessa Avenue as a teenager, and attended Van Nuys High School.
A nationally famous landmark is the old expansive Chevrolet manufacturing facility which was dismantled and converted into The Plant shopping mall. Recently, the real estate of Van Nuys has partially split into other areas called Valley Glen and Lake Balboa.
